I’ve pivoted before in my career, when I moved from being a broadcast international news journalist to Public Relations, but my career took an undesired turn for a couple of years. This was not something I had envisaged, or desired. Something had to change. I loved Communications, and wasn’t ready to give up on the sector, or high-growth companies, yet I no longer wanted to be locked in cultures where toxicity was tolerated as a ‘way of

life’. I felt I had much more to give, more potential to fulfil, more knowledge to gain and deploy in the world.

I had a Discovery Call with Pattie at a time when I was looking to move from a large global FS institution, after what had been an enduring and successful phase of my career. The biggest challenge was that it had been while since changing companies and I was not used to proactively looking for roles, networking or interviewing externally. Before I started coaching I knew in the back of my mind that I needed to focus my thoughts, strategy and direction of my career but I wasn’t sure how to do this. Having been informally mentored at work I knew the benefit of an independent voice, sometimes only to reinforce what you already know, but I thought it would be worth exploring coaching with a professional coach. 

I was not sure how the personal dynamic would work, as I guessed that it was very dependent on whether you can build a rapport with your coach. The thing that allayed my fear was the introductory conversations with Pattie – these reassured me that she was an open, engaging, thoughtful and considered person. Someone I could have a sensible conversation with that would advance and explore the topics I wanted to work on. 

The process has been far more revealing and rewarding than I hoped. Pattie is expert at letting you walk through the topics that you want to develop, but most importantly she knows where to pause and dig into issues that require more thought. This is the real value in coaching and Pattie is excellent at this particular aspect of coaching. 

The primary benefit of my coaching with Pattie has been to focus on and crystallise what I bring to my job, what makes me tick and what differentiates me against my peers. From this I have really been able to focus on what I’m good at and therefore how to really capitalise on my career and a strategy to take it forward.
